Frequently Asked Questions
You do not need to be in crisis or have a diagnosis to benefit from counselling.
You may simply feel that something isn’t quite right, that you’re finding things difficult to manage, or that you would like some support to make sense of what you are experiencing.
Counselling can provide a safe and confidential space to explore what is happening, understand your needs and consider what might help you move forward. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin.
The first session is an opportunity for us to begin getting to know each other and for you to talk about what has brought you to counselling and what you would like support with.
We can talk about what you have been experiencing, what you would like to be different and what you hope to get from counselling. It is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about how we will work together.
There is no expectation that you need to tell me everything straight away. We will take things at a pace that feels manageable for you, and you can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with.
There is no fixed number of counselling sessions that is right for everyone. The length of counselling will depend on your individual circumstances, what you would like support with and what feels helpful for you.
Some people find that a shorter period of counselling is enough, while others benefit from having more time to explore things in greater depth.
We can regularly review how counselling is going and talk openly about whether continuing feels helpful and appropriate for you.
No. You do not need a formal diagnosis to access counselling.
You may already have a clear sense of what you are struggling with, or you may simply feel that things don’t seem as manageable as they once did. You don’t need to have a diagnosis, or even be able to fully explain what is happening, before seeking support.
Counselling can provide a space to explore what you are experiencing and consider what may help.
Yes. Online counselling is available and can be a flexible option if attending in person is difficult or if you simply prefer to have your sessions from a private space that feels comfortable for you.
Online sessions offer the same confidential and supportive space as face-to-face counselling, and we can discuss whether this way of working feels right for you.
Yes. I offer selected evening appointments and some weekend availability, subject to availability.
If you need an appointment outside of standard daytime hours, please get in touch to discuss the options currently available.
Yes. Confidentiality is an important part of counselling, and what you share with me will be treated with care, respect, and discretion.
There are some circumstances where confidentiality may need to be limited, for example if there is a serious concern about your safety or the safety of someone else, or where there is a safeguarding concern. These situations are uncommon, and I will explain the limits of confidentiality clearly at the beginning of our work.
If I ever have concerns that may require information to be shared, I will discuss this with you wherever it is appropriate and safe to do so.
Finding the right counsellor is important, and it is completely okay if you feel that someone else may be a better fit for you.
Counselling is a collaborative process and feeling comfortable with the person you are working with matters. If you feel that my approach or experience is not the right fit for your needs, you are welcome to say so.
Equally, if I feel that another type of support or a different professional may be more appropriate for you, I will discuss this with you openly and, where possible, help you identify an appropriate source of support.
I understand that circumstances can change and that sometimes appointments need to be cancelled or rearranged.
Wherever possible, please provide at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or rearrange an appointment.
Appointments cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice, or missed appointments, will normally be charged at the full session fee. I understand that unexpected circumstances can arise, and individual circumstances will always be considered where appropriate.
